What Is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive eating is understanding your body’s own signals for when it’s full and when it’s hungry. Basically, it's the idea that you eat when you’re hungry and you stop eating when you’re full.

While other diets focus on eating certain foods, watching how much of something you eat, or portioning out every meal and snack. But intuitive eating looks at your body and the different hunger cues it sends you throughout the day. So instead of offering different guidelines for what you can do, you become the person who makes choices about what your body needs.

With this type of mindset, you can develop a healthy attitude toward food and your body image. But this mindset also requires you to understand the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.

Physical Hunger

This is a biological urge where your body is telling you that you need more nutrients. These signs can include fatigue, growling stomach, or irritability. This hunger will be fulfilled when you eat.

Emotional Hunger

This type of hunger happens when you’re feeling different emotions, like:

  • Sadness

  • Boredom

  • Loneliness

  • Anger

These emotions can leave you craving different foods that your body doesn’t actually need, like your comfort foods. When you can identify these emotional cravings, you can instead treat the root of that emotion instead of eating.
