Aviation Medicine

Dr. Shreder’s Path to AME

Eric Shreder is a uniquely qualified to be your Aviation Medical Examiner. His passion for flying started long before he became a medical doctor. Eric Shreder started his aviation career at McDonald Douglas and Boeing as a cockpit design engineer. Already an accomplished pilot and Certified Flight Instructor at the time his love for flying became his full time job after he graduated from Villanova.

 Aviation Medicine

After deciding he would rather be his own boss and help people not machines he packed up the family and went to medical school. With his time dedicated to studies he did not get to fly as much as he liked but he always knew as soon as he could he would become an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)

In 2001 before really having started his medical practice he got his certification from the FAA and became a medical examiner. It was not long after that he became a Senior AME and could perform all classes of flight physicals.

In the years that followed an office move from Val Vista Lakes and Lakeview Family Medicine in 2007 to the Pierpont Office complex down the road we always held appointment spots daily for his pilots. As other AME retired and moved on doctor Shreder has adapted his practice to maintain a balance of taking care of his medical patients and always making time for his pilots.

Support Staff

Recently in an effort to improve our FAA services at Full Circle Health (formerly known as Pierpont Family Medicine), we have opened additional scheduling slots for flight examinations and pilot consultations, usually same or next day.

Our office staff that handles the FAA paperwork has a combined 25+ years of FAA experienced with an extensive experience with special issuance examinations. Many times the reporting and paperwork can be the most complicated part of your exam.

With these changes we are minimizing pilot wait times and accommodating more appointments. Initial complicated special issuance appointments will be scheduled for longer appointment times to allow for extra attention and resources to address the FAA’s requirements. These visits may require a consultation visit prior to the actual flight exam. Additional charges for added paperwork and consultations may apply

Special Issuances

Dr Shreder is experienced in expediting ANY SPECIAL ISSUANCE if it is at all possible! Because the FAA has a well defined protocol for most Special Issuance medical conditions, there is no advantage seeking one AME over another. The AME that will pick up the phone and call on the airman’s behalf, is the one that you want!

HIMS – Human Intervention Motivation Study

HIMS is specific to commercial pilots and coordinates the identification, treatment and return to the cockpit of impaired aviators. Companies, and pilot unions, along with the FAA and your AME work together to preserve the careers and further air safety for specific airman who require this program.  The FAA will send you a letter telling you if you require a HIMS AME – it is a select few Senior AME’s like Dr. Shreder who participate in the HIMS program.

Certification Basics

Duration: Airman medical certificates expire in 6 – 60 months depending on age and class, the general rule is:

  • 1st Class (ATP): Every 12 months if younger than age 40, Every 6 months over 40
  • 2nd Class (Commercial Pilots): 12 Months
  • 3rd Class (Private / Student / Recreational Pilots):
    • 2 Yrs if Over 40 Old
    • 5 Yrs if Under 40 Old

Not just an AME

Our family medicine side of our practice can accommodate pilots with their general healthcare needs including:

  • Blood pressure control
  • Diabetes control
  • Weight loss
  • Hormone replacement therapy.

These services may be especially important given the FAA’s emphasis on weight loss and sleep apnea.

Because he functions as a “real doctor,” not just an AME, the family medicine side of the practice —

Unlike many AME’s, Dr Shreder feels comfortable treating pilots as our regular patients and understands what will get pilots into and out of trouble with the FAA from a medical perspective. A large percentage of professional pilots trust and rely on Dr Shreder and his staff to keep them and their families healthy – just ask one who is a regular patient.
