PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma

A Non-Surgical alternative to Surgery or Steroid Injections

What is PRP?

It is the use of one’s own plasma…containing platelets which is then injected into the painful, injured site of a tendon or Bursa. Platelets are selected because they form a fibrin clot containing growth factors that enhance tissue healing.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets.

The concentrated platelets found in PRP include growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration.

These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, and help stimulate the wound healing process.

How does PRP work?

peak_prp_image01To prepare PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins and separates the platelet rich plasma.

This increases the concentration of platelets and growth factors up to 780 percent which increases the healing capabilities of the damaged or weakened connective tissue that is being treated. We call it PRP Ultra!

When PRP is injected into the damaged area, it stimulates the tendon or the ligament causing mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the collagen matures, it begins to strengthen the tendons or ligaments of the damaged area.

What can be treated?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy has recently appeared as a new treatment for arthritis.

A Cornell University researcher recently showed that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy can enhance the healing response and quality of repair at the cellular level in treatment of tendinitis.

Full Circle Health is not just a referral center. We constantly train to improve and expand our patient services. I am always amazed by how many times I hear from patients “I didn’t know you did that or I would have had you do that (procedure) here rather than travelling to the Specialist.” From time to time this site will be updated to illustrate our new and improved capabilities.

Why Consider Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP):

PRP is used to heal chronically painful and weak tendon conditions such as: Tennis Elbow, Patella Tendonosis, Shoulder Bursitis, Achilles tendonosis or Faciitis . PRP is generally used in the same areas that steroids are typically used. In the past, if steroids and Physical Therapy failed to accomplish the desired healing, surgery was the only option. Now, we have a new, all-natural option – PRP. PRP is made from your own blood (Autologous). A small amount of your own blood (30 ML) is drawn with aseptic technique. This blood is processed in our state of the art Bioprp6met centrifuge. Our machine produces platelet rich portion is concentrated up to 780% – making it PRP Ultra! 3 ML of this concentrate is then injected into the site of desired healing.
In addition to clotting wounds, Platelets contains powerful growth and healing factors. The whole procedure takes less than 1 hour to accomplish. If you have had more than 2 steroid shots that have failed to address a chronic tendon problem please ask Dr Shreder to explain the potential benefits.

PRP injections can be performed in tendons and ligaments all over the body.

Sports injuries’ such as Tennis elbow, Bursitis, Golfer elbow and other tendinopathies may all be treated effectively with PRP.

Beyond PRP and our new PRP Ultra +.

For over 12 years, we have been performing Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections (Using our PRP Ultra version for 10 years) to speed the healing of injuries to tendon, bursa, cartilage and muscle tears successfully. Of late, we have been employing PRP to improve skin healing in aesthetic dermatology and stimulate hair growth – all with great success!

The weakness of using PRP is that, as patients age, the growth factors that are released from their platelets seems to decline. How to improve on the success of PRP?

Then comes along – “stem cell therapies and amniotic fluid.” Stem cells can be harvested from adipose tissue thru liposuction, or by drilling a hole in your hip (yikes – painful) and harvesting your bone marrow. In either case, your stem cells are “as old as you are.” Like PRP, the regenerative powers of the magical cells are reduced by age.

Why waste? – cord blood stem cells, amniotic fluid, and placental tissue? All previously discarded, these tissues have found a new use. All these tissue and growth factor sources are 9 months old!!! They supported us when we were growing at our maximum rate in the womb! Initially used for burn patients, and to heal non-healing wounds, these tissues seemed to speed up the healing process greatly – even in unhealthy patients! Along comes cord blood stem cells. As processes have improved to preserve living cord blood stem cells, questions have arisen as to their compatibility with a different genetic host. If these cells survive the transfer and begin living and replicating in your tissue – you would become a “chimera” with your donor. Since the amniotic fluid is full of growth factors, can be sterilized, and is free from controversy, why not use that?

We call it PRP Ultra + and it combines theses therapies, our high concentration PRP and amniotic fluid growth factors. By combining the best of both worlds, Dr Shreder has been able to provide the best possible change for healing.  Not a band aid, not just cover up the injury and make pain go away actual regeneration.

This procedure is not right for all injuries, or patients, and a consultation with the doctor is needed to see if we can truly help you.  We will not perform this procedure until we have assessed the degree of injury and you are fully informed of the chance for success.  We want this to be a life changing experience and if we feel it will not work to your satisfaction we will not do it.
